Rice University's acceptance rate is 8.0%, with 2,948 students admitted from 36,791 first-year applicants for fall 2025 entry, the Class of 2029 and the latest class with full official counts. Rice is a private research university in Houston that reviews every file holistically, and it is test-optional for applicants for fall 2027 entry.

Demand is still rising: Rice's report on record demand counts more than 38,000 first-year applications for fall 2026, the most in its history and 5% more than the year before. What matters more for you is how the rate shifts by round and by where you live.

Rice University Acceptance Rate: Class of 2029 and Class of 2030

Stat callout showing Rice University's 8.0% acceptance rate for the Class of 2029

Rice's overall admit rate was 8.0% for the Class of 2029, and the Class of 2030 drew a record pool. Rice's class profile for the 2024-25 cycle matches its Common Data Set and counts 1,263 enrolled students.

A bigger class has not meant easier odds. Rice says its applications rose 17% between 2022 and 2025, more than four times the 4% median growth among highly ranked private AAU peers, and it calls its fall 2026 first-year class, the Class of 2030, both the largest and the most selective in Rice history. Schools this competitive reward files that read as coherent, so understand the qualities selective colleges look for in applicants before you commit an application.

Scores for deposited students sit high. Rice's class profile puts the Class of 2029 middle 50 percent at 1510 to 1560 on the SAT and 34 to 36 on the ACT. Those are the 25th and 75th percentiles of students who sent scores, not a cutoff. Rice superscores both tests, using the highest score from each section across all tests.

Rice University Early Decision Acceptance Rate: Does Applying ED Help?

Comparison table of Rice University Early Decision vs all rounds admit rates for fall 2025: 11.3% ED vs 8.0% overall

Rice's Early Decision admit rate was 11.3% for fall 2025 entry, against 8.0% for all first-year applicants that cycle. Early Decision is a binding commitment: an admitted ED applicant agrees to enroll and withdraw other applications. Rice offers two binding rounds, ED I and ED II, plus Regular Decision, and no early action option. IvyStrides' analysis of Rice's CDS 2025-26 counts, 647 admitted from 5,748 Early Decision applicants across both rounds, puts the Early Decision acceptance rate at 11.3%.

Rice's FAQ answers "Not necessarily" when asked whether applying Early Decision improves your chances, and the numbers do not prove causation. Early rounds draw a self-selected, application-ready pool, so a higher rate can reflect stronger candidates as much as the round itself.

The deadlines are firm. ED I closes November 1. ED II and Regular Decision both close January 4. Rice also accepts the QuestBridge National College Match. Every ED outcome is admit, defer, or deny, and deferred applicants move to the Regular Decision pool. Before you sign a binding agreement, weigh how binding Early Decision differs from early action and regular decision, because a binding yes forecloses every other offer.

So who should use ED? A student certain Rice is their first choice, whose file is already strong. If your SAT sits below Rice's 25th percentile of 1510 and a retake could move it, think hard about applying early decision with a borderline test score before locking yourself into November.

Read those rates with care: they cover one cycle and do not adjust for how strong each pool is. Rice's CDS rates state residency and geographical residence as Considered, the third of four levels. Every file goes through the same committee review, and Rice's application philosophy says it evaluates each student's accomplishments "within the context of their life experiences" and is "careful not to emphasize any single academic metric, such as class rank, grade point average or test scores."

That differs from UT Austin, which for fall 2027 applicants automatically admits Texas students in the top 5% of their high school class and must fill 75 percent of its Texas resident spaces that way. Texans applying to both should weigh how UT Austin's admit rates split between in-state and out-of-state applicants against Rice's file-by-file read, where class rank is one of nine Very Important factors.

Location also shapes how easily you can show interest. Rice rates "level of applicant's interest" as Considered, so if you cannot visit campus, learn how colleges track demonstrated interest and build it through virtual events and the supplement instead.

What Rice Actually Weighs: Holistic Review Factors and the Seven Schools

Rice rates nine factors as Very Important in its Common Data Set, which is why a single strong number rarely carries a file. The Common Data Set is a standardized report many colleges publish each year on their admissions and enrollment, and section C7 of Rice's CDS 2025-26 rates each factor as shown below.

Source: Rice CDS 2025-26, section C7. Scores rate Very Important even though Rice is test-optional for applicants for fall 2027 entry, so a strong submitted score works for your file.

Two readers see every file. Rice has used committee-based evaluation since 2017: pairs of officers read each application, one focused on academics, one on personal elements, and each file is discussed by at least two officers.

The Rice Supplement runs three essays. Per Rice's first-year applicant page: a 150-word essay on your academic interests and how you would explore them at Rice, a 150-word essay on the elements of the Rice experience that appeal to you, and a 500-word essay choosing between a community-contribution prompt and a change-agent prompt. All applicants also upload The Box, a two-dimensional image Rice says is not used for evaluative purposes.

In our coaching, the 150-word academic essay is the one students most often underwrite, treating it as a list of interests rather than a focused argument for one school within Rice.

And that school choice is not cosmetic. Applicants pick one of seven schools of study, from architecture to social sciences, and up to three majors or areas of interest, and Rice's FAQ says students are assessed on their "preparedness and alignment to the majors they selected."

Two schools carry special requirements. The Rice School of Architecture needs a separate PDF portfolio, up to 10 pages and 15 MB, uploaded to the Rice portal. The Shepherd School of Music sets a December 1 deadline and a live audition on campus with no regional auditions, and music applicants cannot use ED I, ED II or QuestBridge. Rice describes its ideal students as "voracious lovers of life" with "unquenchable curiosity about the world," so match your essays to that language, not a generic prestige pitch.

Interviews are optional and virtual. A Rice Alumni Volunteers for Admission member or a current student conducts them, with request deadlines of November 3 for ED I, December 16 for RD priority, and January 6 for ED II and RD. Either way, name specific Rice courses, faculty, or residential college traditions in the 150-word Rice-experience essay, because Rice evaluates applicants on their knowledge of the Rice undergraduate experience.

All of that has to cohere into one file. In our college admissions counseling for grades 11 and 12, IvyStrides counselors work through that Rice file with you: matching your school of study to your record, shaping the two 150-word essays around named Rice resources, and setting an ED I or ED II timeline. Many colleges publish the same report, so compare section C7 of each school's Common Data Set with Rice's ratings to see where each school asks for the most.

FAQ: Rice University Acceptance Rate and Admissions

What GPA do you need to get into Rice?

Rice publishes no minimum GPA and reports no average GPA in its CDS 2025-26. It rates academic GPA and rigor as Very Important, and 90% of enrolled first-years who submitted a class rank were in the top tenth. Rice reads GPA in the context of course rigor, so a 4.0 in a light curriculum does not equal a 3.9 loaded with AP and honors courses.

Is Rice University an Ivy?

Rice is not an Ivy League school. The Ivy League is a specific athletic conference of eight northeastern universities. In selectivity Rice ranks alongside Ivy schools, with an 8.0% acceptance rate for fall 2025 entry, but it is not a member.

Can I get into Rice with a 1400 SAT?

Rice's SAT middle 50 percent for Class of 2029 deposited students is 1510 to 1560, so a 1400 sits below the 25th percentile. Because Rice is test-optional for applicants for fall 2027 entry, a student with a 1400 can withhold the score and still get full consideration.

Why is Rice University so hard to get into?

Rice received more than 38,000 first-year applications for fall 2026, the most in its history, and it admitted 8.0% of first-year applicants for fall 2025 entry. With nine factors rated Very Important, no single strong number carries a file.

Your Next Step Toward a Rice Application

Place yourself honestly against the data, then decide your round and get the essays moving.

  • Compare your SAT or ACT to Rice's middle 50 percent (1510-1560 SAT, 34-36 ACT) and decide whether to submit or withhold.
  • Choose your round: ED I by November 1, or ED II and RD by January 4, weighing the binding commitment.
  • Draft the two 150-word essays first, tying each to a named Rice school, major, or tradition.
  • If you plan an interview, submit the request by your round's interview deadline.
