Gifted & talent-search resources
Academic talent search programs.
Talent searches let middle-school and younger students take above-grade-level tests — the SAT, ACT, or PSAT 8/9 — years early. A strong score identifies advanced ability and unlocks eligibility for the university gifted summer programs these centers run. It's also an early, low-stakes way to get familiar with the tests that matter later.
Johns Hopkins CTY Talent Search
Above-grade SCAT, PSAT 8/9, SAT & ACT (grades 2–12); scores set a CTY eligibility level that gates its summer, online, and family courses.
Northwestern NUMATS
Above-grade PSAT 8/9 (grades 3–6) and SAT/ACT (grades 6–9); results feed CTD's Pathways placement into gifted and summer programs.
Belin-Blank BESTS
Above-level Iowa Assessments (grades 4–6) and ACT (grades 7–9) to identify advanced ability and guide enrichment.
Talent Identification Program of Kentucky (TIP-KY)
Above-grade ACT (grades 7–8) for top-decile students; a partial successor to Duke TIP, with pathways to WKU gifted programs.
GATE Above-Grade Testing
Proctored above-grade ACT/SAT scores assess readiness and place students into MSU's GATE accelerated and summer programs.
Dates, deadlines, and eligibility change every year — always confirm details on each program's official site. Programs verified operating in 2026; if you spot one that's moved or closed, let us know.
