How Hard Is It to Get Into NYU? Pick Your School and Campus First

NYU is very hard to get into. NYU admitted about 9% of first-year applicants for fall 2024, according to its Common Data Set, which places New York University among the most selective universities in the country. Stern adds math course expectations and Tisch adds an artistic review, so the bar also depends on the school you choose.

Those figures and the policy points below trace to official admissions pages and Common Data Sets, cited where each claim appears. The harder question, and the one this article answers, is which school inside NYU fits you, and whether your file is built for it.

How Hard Is It to Get Into NYU? Pick Your School and Campus First

How Hard Is It to Get Into NYU Compared to the Ivy League?

NYU is not an Ivy League school, but it now admits fewer than one in ten first-year applicants. The Ivy League is a specific athletic conference of eight universities, and NYU sits outside it. NYU's 2024-25 Common Data Set shows 10,232 of 110,807 first-year applicants admitted for fall 2024, about 9%.

That shift is recent. For fall 2014, NYU's Common Data Set showed 18,010 of 50,804 first-year applicants admitted, about 35%, nearly four times the fall 2024 rate.

Where the Ivies land. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia each admitted under 5% of first-year applicants for fall 2025, according to their 2025-26 Common Data Sets, so they remain more selective than NYU; Cornell admitted about 8%. Testing differs too. For fall 2027 entry, Harvard, Yale, and Cornell require the SAT or ACT, while Princeton and Columbia stay test-optional for that cycle and require scores from fall 2028 entry.

UniversityFirst-Year Admit RateTest Policy, 2026-27 Cycle (Fall 2027 Entry)
NYUAbout 9% (fall 2024)Test-optional (also for fall 2028 entry)
HarvardUnder 5% (fall 2025)Required
YaleUnder 5% (fall 2025)Required (SAT or ACT)
PrincetonUnder 5% (fall 2025)Test-optional; required from fall 2028 entry
ColumbiaUnder 5% (fall 2025)Test-optional; required from fall 2028 entry
CornellAbout 8% (fall 2025)Required

NYU is test-optional for the 2026-27 cycle and says it will stay test-optional through the 2027-28 cycle, so a score is your choice there, while the Ivy League's testing rules for fall 2027 decide whether you need one at those peers.

What NYU Looks for by School: Stern, Tisch, Tandon, and CAS

NYU admits students to a specific school, not to one undeclared pool, so the right benchmark depends on which school you target. You apply directly to NYU Stern, NYU Tisch, NYU CAS, NYU Tandon, or another school, and each sets its own course expectations and extra requirements. NYU's Common Data Set reports admissions for the university as a whole, blending all of them, with no figures by school.

Stern (business) expects Calculus, or at least Precalculus, and NYU encourages A-Level Mathematics for Stern, computer science, and engineering applicants, and IB Mathematics for Stern and Tandon applicants. Applicants outside the US system often weigh how AP coursework compares with A-Levels for engineering and business preparation when they map a transcript against those expectations.

Tandon (engineering) expects Physics, Chemistry, and Calculus or at least Precalculus. Meyers (nursing) expects Chemistry.

Tisch (arts) adds an artistic review, an audition or portfolio, for every program, and NYU advises submitting the Common App one month early for these programs and for Steinhardt programs that require artistic review. Steinhardt requirements vary by program: Music Business needs no audition or supplemental package, while Studio Art requires a portfolio and a one-page statement of purpose. For programs that require a portfolio or audition, NYU's Common Data Set rates artistic talent as Very Important.

CAS is the broadest school, with holistic review and no single-subject portfolio requirement.

TandonNone beyond standard appPhysics, Chemistry, Calculus/Precalc
TischArtistic review (every program)Varies by program
Steinhardt (Music)Varies by program (none for Music Business)Varies by program
Meyers (Nursing)None beyond standard appChemistry

Identify your target school before you apply: the Stern and Tisch processes differ from a standard CAS application. One application covers NYU's New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai campuses; you name an academic area for each campus you apply to.

Applicants to audition and portfolio programs face that artistic review on top of the standard Common App, including the optional bridge-builder essay, so decide early whether the NYU supplemental essay is worth writing for your file.

What NYU Weighs Most: The Five Very Important Factors

NYU rates five factors as Very Important in its 2025-26 Common Data Set.xlsx), section C7: rigor of secondary school record, academic GPA, application essay, recommendations, and character/personal qualities. Those are the levers that carry your file. The same CDS marks class rank, interview, alumni relation, state residency, and religious affiliation as Not Considered.

No interviews, one recommendation. NYU states it "does not offer interviews to any candidates". It requires one recommendation letter and accepts up to three. After you submit the Common App, you complete STARS, NYU's self-reported transcript system.

On course rigor. NYU says its top applicants take demanding coursework for four years in English, history or social studies, math, lab science, and a foreign language. NYU does not hold students at a disadvantage when their schools lacked those options. Because rigor is Very Important, admissions officers read how your transcript's course choices weigh against the grades on it as closely as the GPA itself.

The essays. The Common App personal statement allows a 650-word maximum across seven prompts, unchanged for 2026-27. NYU's supplemental essay is the optional bridge-builder prompt: 250 words or fewer, with the Writing section pre-checked on the Common App.

NYU says it wants students who connect people, groups, and ideas across divides, and the prompt offers three guiding questions about meeting a different perspective, working with others who see things differently, and watching someone help others work together. Answer it with a specific moment of genuine connection across difference, not a generic community-service story.

NYU is test-optional through the 2027-28 cycle, so you choose whether to submit an SAT or ACT score rather than meeting a requirement. That choice has its own calculus, and whether a submitted score strengthens a test-optional NYU file turns on your scores and your target school. Applicants who do submit testing pick one form only: SAT, ACT, AP exams, the IB Diploma, A-Levels, or another international exam. AP credit policies vary by college, and admissions turn on the full application, never one factor.

The application essay and course rigor are the two factors that preparation in grades 9 through 11 can shape most before the Common App opens. Starting early leaves room for a counselor who maps your course list against each school's expectations, who adjusts the schedule year by year toward your target school.

Is NYU Early Decision Worth the Binding Commitment?

NYU offers two binding Early Decision rounds and a Regular Decision round, with no Early Action. ED I closes Nov 1 with a Dec 15 decision; ED II closes Jan 1 with a Feb 15 decision; RD closes Jan 5 with an Apr 1 decision. Because the binding rule is strict, the round you choose is a real strategic decision, not a scheduling one.

What binding means here. If NYU admits you ED, you must withdraw your other applications and enroll. NYU grants ED exceptions when a student is not admitted to their first-choice NYU school, program, or campus, or when the aid package does not meet enough of the student's financial need. An ED applicant whom NYU does not admit cannot then apply RD.

NYU's 2024-25 Common Data Set leaves its Early Decision application and admit counts blank, so treat any NYU ED rate you see elsewhere as an estimate. Strategically, ED signals strong commitment at a school that rates character as Very Important.

RoundDeadlineDecision DateBinding?
ED INov 1Dec 15Yes
ED IIJan 1Feb 15Yes
RDJan 5Apr 1No

Balancing NYU's school-specific requirements against realistic targets is the planning IvyStrides' admissions counselors work through with students from grade 9 onward. If you are weighing NYU ED against another binding offer, the rules around applying early decision to more than one school matter before you commit. The binding piece also means you cannot compare aid packages from other schools first, so families who need to weigh financial aid before an early decision commitment should settle that math first.

Your next step on NYU. The benchmark that matters is the school you apply to, not the overall rate. Pick that school and confirm its course expectations, check your transcript against four years of core academics, and choose ED I, ED II, or RD by how ready your file is. Draft the optional bridge-builder essay only if you have a real moment to tell, and treat test submission as a choice while NYU stays test-optional through the 2027-28 cycle.

FAQ: NYU Admissions Difficulty and Requirements

How much GPA do you need to get into NYU?

NYU does not publish a minimum GPA cutoff, but its Common Data Set rates academic GPA as Very Important. Admitted students typically present strong grades earned in demanding coursework across English, math, lab science, history, and a foreign language. Course rigor carries as much weight as the number itself.

Does NYU admit by major or by school?

NYU admits you to a specific school or college, not to one undeclared pool. You apply directly to Stern, Tisch, CAS, Tandon, or another school, and each sets its own requirements. Some schools, such as Tisch, add an audition or portfolio step.

Is it easier to get into NYU with Early Decision?

NYU's 2024-25 Common Data Set leaves its Early Decision counts blank, so it gives no ED acceptance rate to compare. Strategically, ED signals strong commitment to NYU as a first choice. The commitment is binding: if NYU admits you, you withdraw all other applications.

What is the hardest program to get into at NYU?

NYU's Common Data Set reports one university-wide figure, not admit rates by school, so treat any school-level ranking you see as an estimate. Stern adds math course expectations, and Tisch adds an artistic review on top of the standard application, making it a two-stage process that rewards early preparation.
