Georgia Tech is a test-required university for fall 2027. Georgia Tech considers a first-year application only when it includes at least one SAT or ACT result. Georgia Tech superscores the SAT, and its Common Data Set rates your transcript above your test score.

Those policy facts come from Georgia Tech's admissions site and its 2025-26 Common Data Set, cited throughout below. A strong number alone does not carry a file here.

Georgia Tech SAT and ACT Policy for Fall 2027: What the Requirement Actually Means

Comparison table of Georgia Tech SAT vs ACT policies for Fall 2027 including scoring scales, superscore rules, and requiremen

Georgia Tech requires a test score. For the 2026-27 cycle, Georgia Tech asks every first-year applicant to submit at least one SAT or ACT result. There is no test-optional path. Section C8 of the 2025-26 Common Data Set confirms it: Georgia Tech marks standardized tests "Required to be considered."

Why no exception exists. Georgia Tech belongs to the University System of Georgia, which names Georgia Tech among the schools that require SAT or ACT scores for admission for fall 2026 and later. So a strong GPA cannot substitute for a missing score here, the way it can at a test-optional school.

The College Board scores the Digital SAT on a 400 to 1600 scale (College Board). The ACT composite runs 1 to 36 and averages English, Math, and Reading only (ACT). Georgia Tech does not require the ACT Writing section, so you can skip that optional add-on without penalty.

Georgia Tech joined a wider shift back to required scores, so if your list spans schools where that policy differs, compare which Ivy League schools now require the SAT or ACT for the same cycle.

Georgia Tech superscores the SAT, combining your best Reading and Writing section with your best Math section across sittings. For the ACT, it takes your highest English, Math, and Reading section scores across test dates and does not use Science or Writing. So a second or third sitting can only help your submitted number.

Is a 1400 SAT Score Good Enough for Georgia Tech?

Bar chart showing Georgia Tech's enrolled SAT middle 50% range: 25th percentile 1370, median 1460, 75th percentile 1530.

A 1400 SAT is a strong test result that lands between the 25th percentile and the median of Georgia Tech's enrolled range. It sits at the 93rd percentile of College Board's user group of recent SAT takers, which tells you the test went well; it does not tell you how Georgia Tech reads it against this pool. Honestly, the number matters less than what sits beside it on your transcript.

Section C9 of Georgia Tech's 2025-26 Common Data Set gives the benchmark. Among fall 2025 enrolled first-years who submitted an SAT (78% of the class), the middle 50% ran from 1370 to 1530, with a median of 1460. The middle 50% ACT composite ran from 31 to 35.

A published middle 50% describes enrolled students who sent a score, not a threshold you must clear. A lower score does not disqualify you, and a top-of-range score does not admit you.

Residency changes what a 1400 means. Georgia Tech aims for Georgia students to form the majority of enrolled students, and its site calls residency one of the biggest impacts on admit rate. Section C1 of the CDS shows it for fall 2025: 3,691 admits from 12,527 in-state applicants and 4,513 from 44,596 out-of-state applicants.

That works out to roughly 29% in state against 10% out of state, so the same 1400 competes in a far tighter pool for nonresidents, which is how the out-of-state admit rate shifts the competitive score.

The score question almost always resolves into a transcript question. A 1400 paired with a demanding course load and a strong weighted GPA reads very differently from the same score with a standard schedule, which is exactly what Georgia Tech's holistic review surfaces.

If you're stuck in the 1300 to 1450 band and weighing a retake before the EA deadline, a timed diagnostic isolates whether the gap sits in Reading and Writing or Math. That is where IvyStrides' 1-on-1 SAT coaching starts, matching a plan to the section that is actually costing you points.

What Georgia Tech Weighs Beyond Your SAT Score

Comparison table showing Georgia Tech's Very Important admission factors versus factors rated Not Considered in its 2025-26 C

Georgia Tech rates four factors Very Important in section C7 of its 2025-26 Common Data Set, and the test score, rated Considered, is not among them. The four are rigor of secondary school record, Academic GPA, character and personal qualities, and state residency.

Course rigor comes first. Georgia Tech defines academic preparation as how you stretched and challenged yourself relative to the curriculum available at your school, whether that is AP, IB, A-Level, or dual enrollment. Reviewers read your load against what your school offered.

For GPA, Georgia Tech uses the GPA on your transcript, preferring a 100-point and weighted scale where available. If your school provides no GPA, it recalculates a weighted 4.0 core GPA, adding 0.5 points for AP, IB, dual enrollment, and AS and A Level courses, part of a broader pattern in how selective colleges read and recalculate your transcript.

FactorWhat Georgia Tech Looks For
Course rigorChallenge relative to your school's offerings
Academic GPAWeighted record; recalculated if needed
CharacterCommitment, initiative, responsibility
State residencyGeorgia residents form the majority
Intended majorEvidence of interest and preparation
ActivitiesTypically 3-5 meaningful commitments

Georgia Tech runs a major-aware review without asking you to apply to a specific major; you select a primary and an optional secondary intended major, and reviewers look for evidence of interest and preparation. For activities, the admissions site describes typically 3 to 5 meaningful commitments showing initiative, and it accepts no separate resume.

The short-answer question is gone for 2026-27, so the Common App personal essay is now the only essay most applicants write for Georgia Tech. That raises the stakes for every word, and where your major story now lives in the Common App essay is a decision you make before drafting. The seven Common App prompts are unchanged for 2026-27 (Common App).

What Georgia Tech does not count. Its CDS marks class rank, interview, first-generation status, alumni relation, religious affiliation, and level of applicant's interest as Not Considered, so demonstrated interest and legacy carry no weight.

Georgia Tech SAT Score Deadlines and How to Submit

Georgia Tech runs three application plans, and each sets its own self-reported test score deadline, which falls after the application deadline. A retake only counts if your new score is released in time to self-report it by your plan's date.

PlanApplication DeadlineDocuments DueSelf-Reported Scores DueDecisionsWho It Applies To
EA1Oct 15Oct 30Nov 16Early DecemberGeorgia residents / GA high school
EA2Nov 2Nov 16Dec 8Late JanuaryNon-Georgia, including international
RDJan 6Jan 22Jan 22Mid-MarchGeorgia and non-Georgia students

Those dates come from Georgia Tech's deadlines page. International applicants follow EA2 or RD and face the same test requirement. You may self-report scores on the Common App or your portal; official scores are needed only if you enroll, before orientation, and SAT scores then go through the College Board process you use to send scores to any school.

Decisions run wider than admit or deny. Georgia Tech may offer a fall admit, a summer admit through the Ignite program (about 600 first-years start in summer), a First-Year Semester Abroad admit, an EA defer to RD, a waitlist spot, a transfer pathway, or a deny. One rule catches applicants off guard: EA-denied applicants cannot reapply in RD.

IvyStrides' analysis of Georgia Tech's published CDS C2 counts for Fall 2025, 653 admitted from 4,875 who accepted a waitlist spot out of 7,651 offered, puts the waitlist-to-admit conversion at roughly 13% of those who accepted. So the waitlist is real but thin; your plan and timing matter more than banking on it.

Georgia Tech reads your score against a transcript it rates higher, and the outcome depends on the full application. Before you decide a retake is worth the time:

  • Compare your SAT total against the enrolled middle 50% of 1370 to 1530, or your ACT against 31 to 35.
  • Factor in your residency: in-state and out-of-state applicants are admitted at very different rates.
  • Check your plan's self-reported score deadline, EA1 Nov 16, EA2 Dec 8, RD Jan 22, before scheduling any retake.
  • If your rigor or GPA is the weaker link, invest there rather than chasing another 20 SAT points.

Choosing between your early plan and RD alongside a retake means holding the score calendar and the application calendar on one page, which is what a counselor who maps your test dates to each deadline does in our grade 11-12 counseling program.

FAQ: Georgia Tech SAT Requirements

Is a 1400 SAT good enough for Georgia Tech?

A 1400 sits inside Georgia Tech's middle 50% for fall 2025 enrolled first-years who sent an SAT, above the 1370 25th percentile but below the 1460 median. It reads more competitively for Georgia residents, who are admitted at a far higher rate than out-of-state applicants. A strong GPA in rigorous courses can offset a score at the lower end.

Can I get into GA Tech with a 1200 SAT?

A 1200 falls 170 points below the 1370 25th percentile, so it sits below most fall 2025 enrolled first-years who sent an SAT. Georgia Tech is test-required and reads the score inside holistic review, so a number this far below the range is a real obstacle. A retake toward that middle 50% is the practical path.

Is 1300 a good SAT score for Georgia Tech?

A 1300 sits 70 points below the 1370 25th percentile for fall 2025 enrolled first-years who sent an SAT, so at least three in four of them scored higher. It does not disqualify you outright, but combined with the holistic weighting of rigor and GPA, a score this far down would need an exceptionally strong transcript to offset. Most students here benefit from a retake first.

Can I get into Georgia Tech with a 2.7 GPA?

A 2.7 GPA sits far below the enrolled profile: in section C11 of the CDS, only 0.18% of fall 2025 enrolled first-years had a GPA between 2.50 and 2.99, and section C12 puts the average at 4.17. Georgia Tech rates Academic GPA Very Important, so a 2.7 would be a substantial obstacle even with a strong test score.
