Georgia Tech removed its supplemental essay for the 2026-27 cycle. Announced July 29, 2026, the change means first-year applicants submit only the Common App personal essay, up to 650 words. Georgia Tech is still test-required for fall 2027 entry. Your major story now lives in that essay and your activities list.
That announcement came from Georgia Tech's own admissions office, which said the short-answer question was no longer a differentiating factor. So if you opened the Common App looking for the Georgia Tech prompt and found nothing, you weren't looking in the wrong place. There is nothing to find.

Georgia Tech Removed Its Supplemental Essay for 2026-27: What Actually Changed

Georgia Tech's first-year application no longer carries a supplemental essay. The admissions office announced the removal on July 29, 2026, effective with the 2026-27 cycle, for students entering in fall 2027.
Here's what stayed and what left. You still choose one of seven Common App prompts, unchanged for 2026-27, and write at most 650 words. You still submit a transcript, an activities list, and test scores. Georgia Tech remains test-required: every first-year applicant must submit at least one SAT and/or ACT result to be considered.
Why they cut it. The executive director of admissions stated the supplement was no longer a differentiating factor and said the change makes review less complex, not less rigorous. That does not make admission easier. The holistic review still applies, and the factors that remain carry the full file.
| Requirement | 2025-26 Cycle | 2026-27 Cycle |
| Common App personal essay | Required, 650-word max | Required, 650-word max |
| Georgia Tech supplemental essay | Required short-answer | Removed |
| Test scores | Required | Required |
| Activities list | Required | Required |
If Georgia Tech is one school on a longer list, note that many other engineering programs still require supplemental essays, so the effort you save here should go toward those prompts and not toward a Georgia Tech piece that no longer exists. What Georgia Tech's Holistic Review Weighs Now That the Supplement Is Gone

Georgia Tech's holistic review weighs academic preparation, contribution to community, major selection, the personal essay, recommendations, and standardized tests. Non-native English speakers may also submit an optional third-party interview. The school describes a selective, holistic review aimed at building a class of innovative thinkers and problem solvers.
Georgia Tech's 2025-26 Common Data Set rates four factors Very Important. The table shows those four beside three of the six factors it rates Not Considered.
| Factor | Importance Rating | Where It Shows in Your File |
| Rigor of secondary school record | Very Important | Transcript, course selection |
| Academic GPA | Very Important | Transcript |
| Character/personal qualities | Very Important | Essay, activities |
| State residency | Very Important | Application data |
| Class rank | Not Considered | n/a |
| Interview | Not Considered | n/a |
| Level of applicant's interest | Not Considered | n/a |
Major-aware review is the easiest piece to misread. You do not apply to a specific major or college at Georgia Tech. You select a primary and an optional secondary intended major, and reviewers look for evidence of interest in and preparation for it. That is where the supplement used to help. Now the evidence has to surface through your course rigor, your activities, and the subtext of your essay.
Academic preparation, in Georgia Tech's words, means how you stretched and challenged yourself relative to the curriculum available at your school: AP, IB, A Levels, or dual enrollment. Not a fixed number of AP courses, but a serious use of what your school offered. For embedding that major interest in a narrative, see how to answer the 'Why This Major?' essay.
Your activities list does the character work now. Georgia Tech names the traits it reads for in contribution to community: commitment, self-motivation, personal responsibility, compassion, initiative, leadership, entrepreneurism, and intellectual curiosity. Typically 3-5 meaningful activities. Work and family responsibilities count. No separate resumes accepted.
Because Georgia Tech is test-required for fall 2027 entry, a strong SAT or ACT score is not optional context; it is a named holistic review factor alongside your GPA and course rigor. Recommendations stay optional: up to three, one counselor and up to two teachers, ideally in core subjects, and a missing counselor letter will not hurt you.
Where Your Major Story Goes in the Georgia Tech Application Now

Your major story goes into the Common App personal essay and the activities list. With no supplemental prompt to carry your major story, the Common App personal essay, up to 650 words and one of seven prompts, is now the only written piece required of all applicants, so it needs to do double duty: show who you are and hint at why your intended major is a natural extension of that.
Do not write a 'Why Major' statement. Moving the old supplement's pitch into the personal essay flattens the narrative. The personal essay is a story about you. Major interest should surface as a thread inside that story, not replace it.
Let the activities list name the robotics club, the research project, or the dual-enrollment calculus sequence. Let the essay show the curiosity underneath it.
| Story Element | Where It Goes in the 2026-27 File |
| Who you are, your voice | Common App personal essay |
| Intellectual curiosity | Essay subtext plus activities |
| Major preparation (projects, research) | Activities list |
| Course rigor for your major | Transcript |
| Leadership and initiative | Activities list |
| Portfolio (Music Technology, some Design) | Separate portfolio submission |
Two edge cases matter. Music Technology requires its own portfolio and essay, and Georgia Tech recommends a portfolio for some College of Design majors, per its major selection page. Everyone else routes major evidence through the three components above.
When the personal essay has to carry this much, a second reader helps. Our college essay coach service works with students on exactly this problem: restructuring a personal statement so major fit shows without the essay turning into a pitch. If you're still choosing which prompt fits your story, our breakdown of the Common App essay prompts for 2026-27 walks through all seven.
Georgia Tech Application Deadlines and Test Requirements for Fall 2027
Georgia Tech runs two Early Action deadlines split by residency, plus Regular Decision. EA1, for Georgia high school students and Georgia residents, closes October 15. EA2, for non-Georgia and international applicants, closes November 2. Regular Decision closes January 6. All three plans are nonbinding and get the same holistic review.
That residency split matters because Georgia Tech names residency as one of the biggest impacts on admit rate, and the school aims for Georgia students to be the majority of enrolled students. Know which deadline is yours before you plan your test timeline.
| Plan | Who It Is For | Application Deadline | Document Deadline | Decision Timeline |
| EA1 | Georgia students | Oct 15 | Oct 30 | Early December |
| EA2 | Non-Georgia, international | Nov 2 | Nov 16 | Late January |
| RD | All applicants | Jan 6 | Jan 22 | Mid-March |
Test scores are required, not optional. Georgia Tech does not publish a minimum cutoff, and your score is read alongside GPA and course rigor, never in isolation.
On GPA: Georgia Tech uses your transcript GPA, preferring a 100-point weighted figure if your school provides one. If none is available, the office recalculates a weighted 4.0 core GPA, adding 0.5 for each AP, IB, dual enrollment, and A-Level course. Complete applications need grades 9-11 visible, and deferred or RD applicants must add fall senior grades.
Decisions come in more than two flavors. Beyond a fall admit or a deny, Georgia Tech offers summer admit through the Ignite program (about 600 first-years start in summer), a First-Year Semester Abroad admit, an EA defer to RD, a waitlist, and a transfer pathway offer. One rule to know: EA-denied applicants cannot reapply in RD.
The waitlist is thin. Georgia Tech's CDS reports 7,651 students offered a waitlist spot for fall 2025, 4,875 accepted, and 653 admitted; that is roughly 13% of those who accepted a spot being admitted. Don't treat those figures as a prediction for 2026-27.
If you're juggling several schools, our rundown of college application deadlines for fall 2027 maps the full calendar. And because your score is a required, reviewed component, students who aren't yet where they want to be can start 1-on-1 SAT or ACT prep built around a timed diagnostic.

Georgia Tech is test-required for fall 2027 entry, and standardized tests are a named holistic review factor. A 1400 SAT sits at the 93rd percentile of SAT takers.
